When there are no good choices...how do you make the RIGHT choice?

Nate and Gabrielle are looking forward to their junior year of high school. Then Gabrielle discovers that she's pregnant.

As shocked as he is, Nate still expects Gabrielle to keep the baby. He's from a Christian family who believes in the sanctity of life. But Gabrielle is leaning toward an entirely different decision--and he's starting to see things her way.

Told from both Nate and Gabrielle's points of view, ABSOLUTE VALUE is a powerful story about two teens and their families who confront the gray area between right and wrong...and who are changed forever as a result.

Absolute Value edition by Anna Henrik Literature Fiction eBooks

Although I enjoyed this book, I feel like the characters emotions and feelings about the abortion and their overall experiences were underdeveloped and unrealistic. I felt like the parents were too understanding and that the main characters "jumped" back into their lives quickly. Overall, I did like the book, but I felt the author treated the subject too lightly and did not portray the gravity or the choices the characters were making.

Absolute Value edition by Anna Henrik Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

Although I finished reading this novel several weeks ago, I continue to think about these wonderful teenagers, Gabrielle and Nate. They are charming and insightful and conflicted in the best possible ways. And as is so often true with first love, their relationship is complicated by battling parents who want the "best" for them. This compelling tale is beautifully handled by Anna Henrik's fine writing. She conveys the value in every character's point of view, wisely referring us to the mystery of stars and numbers, and the remarkbale lessons they teach in their seemingly random patterns.
It would be easy to classify Anna Henrik's debut book for young adult readers as a book about teen pregnancy. But describing it as a single-issue 'problem' novel when Absolute Value is so much more does this exceptional story a grave injustice. At its core Henrik's book is a portrait of two teens who are trying to navigate the difficult terrain of adolescence, seeking to establish unique, authentic identities within their families, school, peer groups, and community. Experiencing joys and taking risks, they move both confidently and clumsily toward an uncertain adulthood. Their story cryptically reveals that nothing is either simple or absolute for young people in today's complex, technologically-driven society.

On the plot level Absolute Value is a powerful and poignant story of sixteen year-old Gabrielle and Nate, juniors in high school, who love each other, but face the consequences of an unwanted pregnancy, a situation that affords them no good choices. Deftly told in alternating points-of-view, it is a rich, tension-filled drama. Henrik is a skillful author who vividly reveals the characters' internal and external conflicts with clear, precise and beautifully written prose.

The author doesn't flinch as she reveals Nate's struggles with long-held religious beliefs and Gabrielle's distress as she negotiates troubled family relationships brought about by her parents' divorce. I was particularly struck by the helpful and hurtful ways that their parents and close friends chose to support, or not support, the teens in their life-altering struggle. In this bold and honest story, the reader may not agree with the final decision, but will certainly understand the emotionally-charged reasons for making it.

I wish that Absolute Value was required reading for every young person who is deciding whether to become sexually active. The book doesn't pretend to offer the answer, but it does an amazing job of raising the questions and revealing the complexity of the choice.
The story kept me interested throughout. Because I wanted to know what decisions the young couple would make, I couldn't put the book down. I liked the story told from the 16 y/o point of view. The book touched on religion and contrasting parenting styles and how they affect their children. Fast reading!
Although I enjoyed this book, I feel like the characters emotions and feelings about the abortion and their overall experiences were underdeveloped and unrealistic. I felt like the parents were too understanding and that the main characters "jumped" back into their lives quickly.
