A 5 star Readers' Favorite Young Adult Science Fiction and Fantasy

The first book of the YA fantasy trilogy of the Goodman Children's Otherworldly Search for their Kidnapped Parents

It seems that nothing could be worse than waking up one morning to find their parents have disappeared and their young brother Bo bawling his eyes out, but for Jack and Brianna, the squabbling teenage sibling rivals, the worst is yet to come.

Much to the bafflement and distress of their children, Marcus and Zelda have actually returned to their home planet, Cygnore. Marcus and Zelda, the runaway prince and princess of Bara and Rion, had a life on Earth. For twelve years, they lived happily and peacefully under the name of 'Goodman'.

Bo is kidnapped. In hot-headed pursuit, Jack and Brianna plunge into a wormhole that takes them to Taron. Little did they know their impetuous arrival in Taron has placed the lives of their parents in peril. Locals catch them and bring them to an arena. In bewilderment and dismay, Jack finds himself fettered to a wall and examined by a smouldering-eyed and blue-skinned young woman of Bara, Lady Cici.

Lady Cici, the daughter of Lord Shusha, has come to the arena for one and only reason -- to have them killed. She is to be engaged to Prince Marcus, their father, and she cannot afford their existence to jeopardize Marcus’ life and her forthcoming engagement. She must have them killed, and the arena, where slaves routinely fight to the death, is the perfect place.

Children of SwanThe Land of Taron Vol 1 A YA Space Fantasy Adventure edition by Coral Walker Children eBooks

Children of Swan is a fairly decent fantasy, sci fi, action and adventure novel with a great story idea but needed to be better developed.

The story features, Jack and Brianna, brothers and sisters who are both sixteen years old. These siblings wake up one morning to discover that their parents have disappeared leaving behind only his father’s mysterious ring. As they try to make sense of their parents disappearance, their younger brother Bo is kidnapped. This leads to Jack and Brianna journeying to the land of Taron on the planet of Cygnore so that they can find their family. While in Taron, the brother and sister begin a very dramatic and action filled adventure.

It is fast-paced and action-packed, and you feel as if you were right there on their extraordinary adventure. However some things were a bit awry and there were times when the emotions and/or the scenery just did not fit together. I don’t even get what was going on with Brianna. The book did not come to an end and that’s a big sucker for me. Sequel, trilogy or whatever, in my mind there must be some amount of closure and some amount of achievement.

Children of SwanThe Land of Taron Vol 1 A YA Space Fantasy Adventure edition by Coral Walker Children eBooks Reviews

“Children of Swan The Land of Taron, Vol 1”, written by Coral Walker, follows the story of Jack and Brianna as they search for their missing parents (who disappeared from their bedroom in strange circumstances) and their abducted little-brother in the land of Taron.

At first, the book seems to begin as a children’s story that rapidly turns into a confusing sci-fi tale. Most of the time I could not understand what was exactly going on (especially in the first quarter of the story) and I believe the book lacked in depth. The descriptions were hollow making it quite hard to imagine the mysterious lands of Cygnore and Taron. Additionally, most events seemed rather unbelievable, mainly due to character’s reactions in situations were I would be crying in fear, we find Jack casually grinning because his sister dancing is funny enough to make him forget the fact that he is in an arena and about to be killed. The reactions of Jack and Brianna and the relationship between them sometimes don’t seem proper for sixteen-year-old teens.

I find it hard to categorise “Children of Swan” as a Young Adult’s book due to the rather childish beginning of the book and character’s personalities. However, when the siblings arrive in Taron, the story becomes suddenly very violent and bloody, which obviously tells me that this isn’t proper for children either.

Nevertheless, the book does propel you to read on, especially because the sense of danger and suspense makes you want to find out if they are going to get out of that mess, and if they are really going to be able to save their parents. Coral masterfully ends the book with an amazing cliff-hanger planting in you the seed of curiosity and inciting you to read the following books.
This was an interesting story with characters that would appeal to YA readers. I wish there was a way to give 3-1/2 stars, since this is closer to a 4 than a 3. My main problem was the story was that is wasn’t developed enough to make it feel complete. The writing style was fine, but there wasn’t quite enough information about all the characters and what was going on. I realize this is a trilogy, but having a more fleshed out first book would help to motivate readers go on to the next book.

As I said, the characters were interesting. They come from various walks of life – everything from royalty to slaves to modern teenagers. The potential is there for some deep thoughts and emotions. It would’ve been nice to have some more information from each person’s perspective.

There’s a lot going on in the story, and there are hints of more complex things to come. I didn’t get the incest angle that many reviewers mentioned. I saw it as vampirism between the royals - not sex, and with the Earth teens it was more that the brother had missed his sister, not that he wanted to have sex with her. I had no issue with that aspect and suspect the readers who did might be trying too hard to see something that’s just not there.

Even with the aforementioned problems, the book is well written and was engaging enough to make me want to read more.
My favorite fantasy series have an inventive sense of world building along with a heavy dose of reality when it comes to the main characters. I like reading about other lands, but I prefer that the characters who populate them behave in a way that is relatable. Children of the Swan definitely fits the bill.

I found myself really relating to the sibling relationship between Jack and Brianna. They squabble a bit like brothers and sisters do, but in the end they are united in trying to reunite their family.

The writing here is top notch. Coral Walker is a superb storyteller who keeps the pace quick and the action coming page after page. Overall, highly recommended!
